Ski Touring on Senja – Norway’s Arctic Ski Paradise

Dreaming of skiing in untouched wilderness surrounded by dramatic mountains and the Atlantic Ocean? Then Senja, Norway’s second-largest island, should be at the top of your list.

Senja offers some of the most spectacular ski touring terrain in the Arctic. Whether you’re looking for steep descents, narrow couloirs, or wide-open alpine faces, you’ll find it all here. Many of the island’s most popular tours begin directly from the roadside, meaning less time approaching and more time skiing.

Skiing in All Weather Conditions

One of Senja’s greatest advantages is its size and varied terrain.

There is almost always somewhere to ski, regardless of the weather. When strong winds arrive from the west, sheltered routes can often be found on the eastern side of the island. If the wind shifts from the east, the opposite applies.

This flexibility makes Senja a reliable destination for ski touring throughout the season.

Untouched Snow and Dramatic Landscapes

Despite its growing popularity among skiers, Senja still offers excellent opportunities to find untouched powder.

The island’s rugged peaks rise directly from deep fjords, creating breathtaking scenery unlike almost anywhere else in Europe.

After a day in the mountains, you may even be rewarded with another unforgettable experience—the Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic sky.

Epic Lines, Endless Views

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

February–March

The ski season typically runs from February until the end of May.

February and March are ideal for those seeking deep snow and frequent snowfall. Temperatures are generally colder, preserving excellent snow quality throughout the mountains. While daylight hours are shorter, there is still plenty of time for full-day ski tours.

This is also the best period for visitors hoping to experience the Northern Lights.

April

April is often considered the prime month for ski touring on Senja. Longer days, more stable weather, and excellent spring snow conditions make it a favorite among many skiers.

The trade-off is that the island attracts more visitors during this period.

May

By May, the Midnight Sun approaches the Arctic. If you enjoy exceptionally long days, warm spring temperatures, and smooth corn snow, this is the perfect time to visit.

Imagine starting a ski tour in the evening and skiing beneath a sun that never sets.

Preparing for Your Arctic Journey

This trip is designed for skiers with previous off-piste and ski touring experience. All skiing takes place in uncontrolled mountain terrain where avalanche hazards exist.

Participants must be comfortable traveling in alpine environments and carry appropriate avalanche safety equipment.

Our offer is available from February 1st to May 1st, and you can book the dates that suit you best.

We recommend flying to:

  • Tromsø (approximately 3.5 hours by car)
  • Bardufoss (approximately 1.5 hours by car)

Car rental is available at both airports and is highly recommended for flexibility during your stay. Please make sure to book your rental car well in advance, especially during peak season.

The nearest grocery store is located in Skaland, about 5 km from the camp. This is a small local shop with a limited selection. For larger purchases, such as clothing or ski equipment, you will need to travel to Finnsnes, approximately one hour away.

Skiing on Senja is truly exceptional, offering breathtaking views and varied terrain in a unique Arctic setting. All skiing is off-piste, and this experience is therefore intended for experienced skiers only.

Please note:

  • You must be confident in off-piste terrain
  • You must bring your own avalanche safety equipment
  • You are responsible for your own safety in the mountains

For those who prefer additional safety and local expertise, hiring a guide is highly recommended. We suggest Bent Vidar from Senja Lodge. With over 18 years of experience on the island, he has extensive knowledge of the terrain and knows where to find the best conditions depending on weather and snow.

All meals are served in our restaurant, The Fat Cod, which is at the heart of the Camp Steinfjord experience.

We focus on quality, simplicity, and a welcoming atmosphere:

  • Breakfast: A generous and well-prepared start to the day
  • Lunch: Warm soup and sandwiches to bring on your tour
  • Dinner: A hearty evening meal served in the restaurant

The restaurant is where guests gather every day—sharing stories, meeting people from around the world, and enjoying good food and drinks together.

We are not trying to be a luxury or “fancy” hotel. Instead, we offer a genuine and personal experience, with a strong home away from home feeling.

If you would like to add variety to your stay, we also offer guided fishing trips, both half-day and full-day.

During spring, it is the season for the famous skrei cod from the Barents Sea. This Arctic cod migrates along the Norwegian coast and is an important part of local tradition.

If successful, you may bring home up to 10 kg of filleted cod, something many of our guests truly appreciate.
